Is Jesus coming soon?
Whenever there is turmoil in the world,
Christians can be quick to assume…
Jesus must be coming soon!
But is He?
I don’t know…
But there are three things about the topic we can all know for sure.
And these are significant things anyone can verify.
First, no one knows when Christ will return.
Jesus made this plain when asked about it by His disciples.
He told them no one knows the day or the hour but the Father (Mt.24:36).
Second, many of the prophesies used today to assume Jesus’s soon return have already been fulfilled.
For example…
In Matthew 24 Jesus speaks of a time when the Son of Man would come with power and great glory.
People commonly apply this prophecy of judgment to our own day or some future time.
But Jesus said this event would take place in the generation alive at the time of His speaking (Mt.24:34).
And He was not mistaken…
… as the prophecy was fulfilled during the destruction of the Jewish Temple in the year A.D. 70.
Third, we’re to be busy with the work God has given us to do.
In another prophetic chapter, Jesus gives what’s called the Parable of the Talents.
Here He reveals where our focus should be in the midst of end-times speculation.
He says it should be on making the
most of the gifts He has given us.
Specifically, he says we are to “occupy” or “engage in business” until He comes (Mt. Lk.19:13).
So in a day when there is a lot of end-times speculating going on, be careful of getting swept up in it…
Don’t let the assumptions some are making about Jesus’s soon return distract you from the work He’s called you to do today.
