A world without landmarks
Should you be much concerned about
landmarks?
The Bible warns several times about the evil of moving them.
Proverbs — for example — says…
“Do
not move the ancient landmark that your fathers have set” (Pr. 22:28).
Most Bible readers come across a verse like this and see it as a reminder not to cheat a neighbor of his property by moving a
boundary marker.
And this is the most obvious application.
But there’s more to see here, so let’s not move on too quickly…
Because in addition to property landmarks, there are also landmarks pertaining to history, doctrine and morals, etc.
And when these landmarks are moved, it cheats people out of more
than just their property…
It ruins their whole society.
This makes the moving of landmarks very serious business.
We see the gravity of it in the words of the prophet Hosea when he promises that God will pour His wrath on the princes of Judah for moving landmarks (Hos. 5:10).
Put another way…
The leaders of that society were to pay a heavy price for their apostasy and corruption.
Looking on our own day, I think Hosea would say something similar…
In recent years there’s been a lot of moving of landmarks — especially in education, politics and law…
As theologian R.J. Rushdoony describes it, this has
destroyed…
“…the barrier between right and wrong, between truth and falsehood, between God and false gods.”
And the net effect of this will be…
“… to murder society and to kill its most basic inheritance.”
So…
When society's landmarks are moved — as they are being moved in our own day — it creates chaos.
And eventually shuts down progress…
As it takes breaks up our common heritage,
infrastructure and unity.
Sadly, we’re becoming a world without landmarks.
The temptation is to shrug and say “Oh well, signs of the times”… and get on with your favorite series on Netflix.
But landmarks can be recovered!
And their significance makes them worth fighting for.
And I would say love of neighbor, children and grandchildren requires it.
