The loyalty principle
“You shall have no other gods before me"
(Ex. 20:3).
The Old Testament is known for assessing kings as to whether they were good or bad.
King Ahaz, for example, was a bad king in that he was an unfaithful idolater, who did not trust God.
Yet his successor, Hezekiah, was a good king because his heart was turned to the Lord, and he sought to turn others to Him as well.
The trait that distinguished good kings from bad ones was whether they were loyal to God.
Did they follow idols or did they follow Him?
That simple.
This principle of loyalty is essential for all of us to remember.
As co-rulers with God, He calls each of us
to be faithful in the domains He's assigned to us.
The circumstances we find in our domains may be difficult, even impossible at times.
But whatever the situation... we can -- by God's grace -- choose to be loyal to the Lord.
Our ultimate help in this is the best king, the King of kings, Jesus.
Jesus
illustrated loyalty to His Father and mission until the end of His earthly life.
Today, He reigns to reclaim us from our idol-chasing ways.
And gives us the grace we need to be loyal in our specific callings as we reign with Him.
