Dogs are a
wonderful part of God's creation.
I had a dog growing up... also when our kids were younger... and not long ago my wife and I got a new dog.
I've loved every dog we've had.
Dogs are well-known for their loyalty...
After a rotten day... when people seem cold... your dog will greet you with a wagging tail when
you walk in the door.
Dogs bring perspective too... as they remind you that no matter how crazy the world becomes, they still need to be fed and go out.
And dogs can be good for empty nesters too... as they keep spouses from focusing on fixing each other, and instead give attention to taking care of and enjoying the dog!
But...
As great as dogs are, they are still only dogs.
They are not people who bear God's image.
And they can never replace people, including children.
A dog can look at you with warm, kind eyes... but you can never communicate with a dog as you would a person.
A dog can learn
to obey you... but he can never embody your values and give you a legacy.
And, a dog may comfort you when you're lonely or suffering... but she can't watch out for you and give you the help you need as
you get older.
In short...
Dogs are a glorious part of creation given to us by God...
And they enrich our
lives in many ways...
But they can't fulfill the essence of God's Dominion Mandate and carry on a family lineage.
We need children for that.
And this is why the Bible says...
"Be fruitful and multiply..." (Gen.1:28).
