An often
overlooked aspect of Jesus's character is His honesty.
Jesus did not shy away from the truth.
Ever.
No matter what the topic or the pressure.
He showed this in the way He would...
Expose sin... as He did when He revealed it's our hearts that make us unclean--Matt. 15:18...
Confront hypocrites... as He did when He called the Pharisees 'whitewashed tombs'--Matt. 23:27...
And even rebuke
friends... as He did when He told the disciples they did not know what spirit they were of--Luke 9:55.
Where did Jesus get such fearless honesty?
I believe it came from His love of the truth and dependence on His Father.
Together, these made honesty a distinguishing aspect of Jesus's life.
He was a
person who had to tell the truth.
Even more...
This attribute of honesty was at the core of His mission.
Jesus could not have fulfilled His calling as Savior without honesty...
The reality of the human condition required it.
And as His followers...
We cannot carry out our own mission without a commitment to being honest either.
This takes courage.
It also takes a tempering of the Spirit... to keep us from becoming judgmental or acting without compassion.
Lord, help us to always be honest--in a way that honors You and furthers Your kingdom.
"Surely You desire truth in the inmost being..." (Psa. 51:6).
