The Spirit of God
seems to be up to something positive at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky.
At the end of a routine chapel service a week and a half ago, many students chose to stay...
... and remained in the chapel to pray, worship, listen to exhortations from others, and confess their sins.
Since then, growing national attention has been on Asbury...
... as students--and others from surrounding communities--have been packing the chapel building (which seats 1500) to join the spiritual exercises taking place.
One Asbury seminary professor witnessing it all is encouraged.
He notes that the activities have very little hype and emotionalism to them...
... and appear to be genuine expressions of love for God and a recognized need for Him.
The situation has people across the country wondering...
Is this
a genuine work of God?
And has the spiritual awakening we so desperately need begun?
Let's hope so.
One of
the leading pastor's during America's First Great Awakening (1720s-1760s)... Jonathan Edwards... wrote an essay on the distinguishing marks of a true work of the Spirit.
In summary...
Edwards taught a real work of God's Spirit should not be claimed merely by the presence of...
... extraordinary events... bodily or emotional effects... impressions on the imagination... or a lot of noise about religion.
Rather...
Evidences of a genuine work of the Spirit will lead to...
... a higher esteem of Jesus Christ... resistance to Satan's interests and sin... greater regard for the Bible... conviction to live in the truth... and a spirit of love toward God and men.
In our day...
With our growing weariness of evil...
Let us pray what is happening at a small Christian university in America's heartland, really is the
start of what Edwards calls 'a true work of the Spirit.'
We sure need it.
