Sometimes when
I'm stuck waiting somewhere I'll scroll through quotes I have saved on my phone.
I do this because it's a pleasant diversion that helps me stay patient.
Plus, I benefit from being reminded of quotations I've previously copied.
Last week I came upon this quote and it got me thinking:
Men who stay boys are predators.
At first glance this may seem a little harsh, but let's unpack it a bit...
God gave men the responsibility to protect.
This goes back to the Garden of Eden (Gen.2:15).
When a man fails in his responsibility to protect he acts
more like a boy than a man.
Because one of the primary distinctions between a man and a boy is...
A man takes responsibility to do necessary and difficult things when a boy will not.
Every boy growing up needs to learn this.
And if he does not, he becomes a predator...
As he seeks to gain pleasure and live his own way at the expense of others--without carrying out his role as a man.
In this sense, Adam was a predator.
Instead of acting like a man by fulfilling his assignment while trusting God...
He let himself get deceived into questioning God and seized the fruit that did not belong to him...
In other words...
Rather than keeping his own desires under control, he became a predator to satisfy them.
Because of Adam...
Every baby boy (and girl) is born a predator at heart.
But the grace of God changes that.
And part of the good news of the gospel is that Jesus turns predators into protectors (as well as pro-creators and providers).
A big problem today is too many men are remaining boys.
And rather than protecting the great heritage and glorious calling God has given them...
They function as predators, who seek to use others for their own gain and pleasure.
The good news is...
God is in the business of transforming men's hearts.
Let's pray He does.
Specifically...
Let us pray men would "act like men" (1 Cor.16:13) and engage their world as protectors, not predators.
