I heard the late Dr. Gary North recommend people take time to write their own obituary.
This may seem an unusual suggestion... and might make you feel uneasy... but I think it's a good exercise...
Because writing your own obituary gets you thinking about the effect of your life...
And specifically the effect you want your life to have.
Whether we realize it our not, all of our lives have an effect -- on people and the world around us.
The question is...
What will the overall effect of your life be?
It depends on the choices you make...
In the Book of Ecclesiastes Solomon says...
"It is better to go to a house of mourning than to a house of feasting, because that is the end of every man, and the living takes it to heart" (Ecc. 7:2).
Going to a funeral gets us thinking about our own lives coming to an end one day.
And taking this to heart...
We need to carefully consider the choices we
make...
And adjust our lives to bring about the greatest effect for good and God's kingdom.
Writing your own obituary can help you think about what this means for you...
Particularly when it comes to the choices and decisions facing you every day.
You may or may not decide to complete the exercise of
writing your obituary...
But do regularly and prayerfully think about the effect of your life.
And make choices and take actions that--by God's grace--will have the most God-honoring, kingdom-building effect possible.
