There's been a
long debate about whether Christians should engage their culture in an effort to improve it.
One common argument against doing so...
Is the fear that engaging culture can become a distraction and lessen one's devotion to Christ.
But there is no reason tending to your culture and following Jesus should be in conflict.
Actually, zeal for each should go together.
When God commissioned Adam to cultivate the Garden it was the start of bringing godly culture to the world (Gen. 2:15).
Adam's fall derailed this project. But it did not put an end to it.
The endeavor just needed God's grace to restore it.
And this is what Jesus ultimately did in His life, death and resurrection.
Christ did not merely come to save souls for eternity.
He came to make "all things new" (Rev.21:5).
This means devotion to both culture and Christ is in order...
... Culture because God's original commission to cultivate the
world with Him remains in force.
... And Christ because it's only through Him we can make our unique contribution in the places He's appointed us.
