Gratitude has
become a bit of a fad these days.
And it's now common for people to cultivate a spirit of thankfulness without being thankful to anyone in particular.
But giving thanks presumes an object.
It assumes there is someone to whom you are directing your gratitude.
But to whom shall we give thanks?
The first and fitting response is the triune God.
Because it is God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit who creates, redeems and applies all the blessings we enjoy.
As scripture says...
"Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above..." (James 1:17).
So be careful of being thankful without an object for your thanks.
Resist the tendency to have mere feelings of gratitude rather than extending them where they belong.
Give thanks where thanks is due.
Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heav'nly host;
Praise
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost!
