The great Bible
scholar James Jordan points out the Bible presents one basic story over and over again.
The basic plot line of this story involves creation, fall, decline, judgement and re-creation... and we see it
repeatedly.
In the beginning God creates Adam, Adam falls into sin, and God gives the promise of redemption.
We see something similar in the history of Israel...
God instructs His people how to live, the people rebel, and God responds with judgment -- but also renewal, in the sending of a prophet or new king.
And in the New Testament...
God sends His Son to His people, they kill Him, yet He's raised from the dead and becomes the cornerstone of the church.
Recognizing this pattern helps understand the Bible and its message to us.
It also positions us to better see God's story at work in our own lives, because there too we see the pattern...
God has made us and calls us to live by trusting Him... we become captured by unbelief and suffer from it... and God renews our hearts with grace to take a fresh start at whatever He calls us to do.
A big part of fulfilling your part in God's grand narrative is seeing where you're currently at in this pattern and moving forward in faithfulness.
Though
the Bible may be complete, God is still writing His story -- and you are in it.
