I remember back in college whenever someone told you their major was 'business' they said it in a hushed tone, as if they were telling you a dishonorable secret.
Now if you were pre-med... that was something to share proudly, with a gleam in your eye, because you were clearly seeking to serve humanity.
But if your major was business, better keep it low-key... because the perception was that you were only going to college to learn how to make money.
Unfortunately, this same spirit of low-level shame afflicts a lot of people who go on to make their livelihood in the business world.
And this is certainly made worse by a media culture that portrays those in business as evil and exploitive.
This ought not be.
People in business do a ton of good. They undoubtedly make the world a better place.
Just about everything we have and take for granted in life -- including jobs, food, phones, plumbing and entertainment -- is because of an entrepreneur or someone in business.
And, of course... non-profit organizations would not exist if it were not for for-profit companies.
So those who are in business are definitely doing their part in fulfilling God's command to rule and cultivate the earth that He gave at the time of creation.
One successful investment advisor made this point when he said...
"Business flows from the creative spirit of mankind who is made in the image of God."
The Bible illustrates this when it tells how the craftsmen hired to build the tabernacle were filled with God's Spirit for the task (Ex.31:2-6).
So if you're in business, take heart! God has given you a meaningful and important area of service.
And if you're married to a business person, give them a word of thanks and a hug.
