Last month I made a practice of reading Romans 1 daily (actually, I missed a few days).
Though given to us almost two thousand years ago, a regular reading of Romans 1 is perfect for understanding our current culture.
The gist of the chapter is simple...
God made the world in such a way that His existence is evident to all, but men suppress this truth in unrighteousness...
When men persist in suppressing God's truth, He gives them over to themselves...
He lets them have their way, leading to a depraved mind... and all sorts of ungodly behavior follows -- marked by greed, envy, murder, deceit, arrogance, inventing of evil, etc. (Rom.1:28ff.)
Romans 1 describes what's happening in present-day American culture to a tee.
The trend of the past decades -- especially in our schools, media and governing bodies -- has been to deny God's reality and design for the world.
The fruit of this defiance is now coming to bear in abundance... in the form of all kinds of perversities, oddities and inane, self-destructive policies.
Once you see this, the question becomes:
How do you live in such a scenario? How do you get along in a Romans 1 world?
Paul answers this in the rest of the book of Romans. I encourage you to read it all, but here are three things that stand out:
1) Stick with the gospel. The gospel changes cultures as it changes lives. It's done it before, it can do it again.
2) Don't be conformed to the lies of this world's system; be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
3) Live in loving community with others who share a commitment to God and His design for humanity.
In short...
Refuse to suppress the truth, wherever it appears... rather, embrace it wholeheartedly, in all its implications.
Denying what's true leads to darkness and ruin. But embracing it brings light and renewal.
"Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth..." (Ps.86:11).
