The challenger in
Florida's race for governor has made an interesting claim.
After winning the recent gubernatorial democratic primary election here, he said...
'I'm running on love and love always wins.'
You know... it's hard to argue against love.
The Bible exalts love as the supreme virtue (1 Cor.13).
And all we do is to be done in love (1 Cor.16:14).
But love is often used as a buzzword, empty of any meaning...
Just think of
all the guys who've told girls they loved them so they could take advantage of them.
Or consider the women who have left their husbands because 'love' led them somewhere else.
So in using the word love, it has to have some content to mean anything.
And the Bible helps with that too.
The Apostle Paul tells us
essentially that love is keeping God's commandments toward one another...
"Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For this, “You shall not
commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Ro,.13:8-9).
So for Paul, acting in love is inseparable from following God's commandments... and not just a feeling.
"It is the fulfillment of the law"
(Rom.13:10).
Jesus said something similar when He pointed out...
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments" (Jn.14:15).
So don't get bamboozled just because someone says they're doing something out of love.
Real love is always in sync with what God has directed us to do.
Jesus demonstrated this in the way He showed obedience to His Father.
And remember too...
God's first instruction to mankind is to
rule and cultivate this world for Him (Gen.1:28; 2:15).
And when you're faithful in this, it is an act of love.
