I was having a
conversation with one of my sons about a decision he had to make.
As he explained his situation, it became clear to me...
The best advice I could give him was:
Think long-term.
Encouraging one another to think long-term is pretty easy advice to give... as it applies to all of us, just about
every day.
We all face pressure to do what's expedient and what seems to work for the moment...
And our flesh cries out for quick gratification and short-term rewards.
Yet the wisdom of scripture urges us to think in terms of the future...
And it warns us to consider not only the consequences
of our actions on ourselves, but their impact on generations to come -- right into eternity.
A classic passage about long-term thinking comes at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.
There Jesus compares the person who hears His words and acts upon them to a man who builds his house securely on a rocky foundation rather than sand (Mt.7:24ff).
In an age where long-term thinking has become rare, considering the future and following Jesus's admonition is often hard.
But the truth remains...
Those who
listen to Him and act accordingly will be in the best place when storms come.
Your greatest security is always found in trusting and obeying God.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
And lean not on your own
understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths (Pr.3:5-6).
