Ever since entrepreneur Elon Musk purchased the social media giant Twitter, conversations about free speech have only increased.
What should we think of this?
Does free speech matter?
Is it biblical?
Should we care?
Absolutely YES.
And here are just a few reasons why having the freedom to speak what's on your mind should be of concern to all of us...
1. We're obligated to speak the truth in love and should not be cancelled or face penalties for doing so (Eph.4:15).
2. Living in a world based on truth and justice requires the free sharing of ideas and information -- to sort out fact from fiction, grow and develop (Pr.18:17; Jd.1:3).
3. Suppressing the truth by denying free speech is a tool of tyrants that leads to a perversion of God's order (Rom.1:18).
Plus...
Dignifying people as fellow image-bearers of God involves a willingness to hear what they have to say.
So indeed.. I believe we should advocate for free speech wherever we can.
And we should also be bold and unashamed to speak freely in any situation that calls for it (Pr.31:8; Mk.8:38).
