Here is a question to regularly ask yourself as you face the issues of your life:
Am I being passive or active?
Our tendency is to be passive...
To see ourselves as victims of circumstances, unable to do anything to change them for the better...
... which allows a spirit of lethargy and defeat to dominate us.
But consider this, dear reader...
So many key passages of scripture call us to be active -- not passive.
Here are just a few I'm thinking of as I write:
- Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth and subdue it (Gen.1:28).
- Love the Lord with all your heart, soul, strength and mind (Lk.10:27).
- Love your neighbor as yourself (Mk.12:31).
- Meditate on God's law day and night (Josh.1:8).
- Train up a child in the way he should go (Pr.22:6).
- Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Mt.6:33).
- Make disciples of all nations (Mt.28:19).
- Don't be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good (Rom.12:21).
- Pray without ceasing (1 Thess.5:17).
- In everything, give thanks (1 Thess.5:18).
- Rejoice in the Lord always (Phil.4:4).
Did you notice?
All these biblical instructions are ACTIVE in nature...
Because God wants us actively engaging Him and our world with every breath He gives us.
So whenever you find yourself in a funk... with fear and depression sneaking into your heart... ask yourself:
Am I being passive when I should be active?
I suspect asking this question and acting on it faithfully would solve a great many personal problems.
See where God would have you reject passivity and employ activity today!
"For in him we live, and move, and have our being..." (Acts 17:28).
