Most people view their personal freedom as an essential value.
But where does such freedom come from? And how is it maintained?
Christian author Os Guinness astutely notes:
“The Spirit of Liberty is not to be found in courts, laws and constitutions alone. Liberty lives in the hearts of men and women; when it dies there, no constitution, no law, no court can even do much to save it. While it lives there, it needs no constitution, no law, no court to save it.”
The Bible affirms this when it simply states:
"... where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty" (2 Cor. 3:7).
The big takeaway from both these quotes is clear:
Freedom ultimately depends on the presence of God's Spirit in the hearts of people.
With the Spirit, freedom thrives; but without Him, it dies.
The reason for this is only God's Spirit can set men free from their greatest strongholds -- the bondage of sin, the oppression of guilt and the fear of death.
And at the same time... it's the Spirit who gives humanity the liberty it needs to fulfill its purpose to glorify God and enjoy Him forever as it rules and cultivates the world for Him.
As America celebrates another birthday... and long held freedoms are threatened like never before... it's prime time to invite the Spirit of God to invade hearts in our beleaguered nation...
Because it's only through the Spirit we can know freedom and continue to enjoy it.
“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (Jn.8:31-32).
