Sometimes friends who are new to our ministry struggle with the word 'dominion' in our name, Made for Dominion.
Concern over the word could be because it sounds like 'dominate'... which can carry negative connotations.
I suppose the notorious Dominion Voting Systems of last election might cool enthusiasm for the word as well!
But once the biblical context of the word dominion is understood, there's no reason for discomfort.
In fact, it's a word that should shape the worldview of every faithful believer.
God calls His people to have dominion in the first chapter of the Bible.
“Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion..." (Gen.1:28).
This section of scripture is known as the creation mandate, which gives to humanity the authority to rule and cultivate the whole earth for God's glory.
Adam was the first to misuse this mandate by seeking to rule his world without God.
By contrast, Jesus came as a faithful dominion man, who fulfilled His life's mission by trusting and obeying His Father.
And now, all who are joined to Christ by faith are able to pursue and bring God's gracious rule to their domains.
Ultimately, it is Jesus who has dominion over all... as the King of kings and Lord of lords, who rules at the right hand of the Father, bringing all things in subjection to Him.
And it is our call and privilege to make His rule visible... as we employ His good gifts in the power of the Spirit to extend His redemption in this broken world.
"To him be the dominion forever and ever" (1 Pet.5:11).
