I was talking with a friend who was discouraged because he wasn't being recognized for his contributions.
He's a faithful, hardworking guy who does a ton of good. And he's actually leaving a big mark on the lives of those around him.
But he's losing heart because nobody seems to notice what he does...
Not only that -- others tend to get credit for the fruit of his efforts.
I'm sure you can relate...
We all hunger for recognition... as a worker, friend, spouse or parent.
But what do you do if 'atta boys' fail to come your way?
The Bible has some pertinent passages to shape our perspective on this.
Here are a few of my favorites...
Do not put yourself forward in the king's presence
or stand in the place of the great,
for it is better to be told, “Come up here,”
than to be put lower in the presence of a noble.
Pr.25:6-7
Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.
Mt.6:1
But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Mt.6:3-4
Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Phil.2:3.
Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. Col.3:23
God is opposed to the proud but gives grace to the humble.
Jas.4:6
Bottom line:
God calls us all to different places, with some getting greater recognition than others... and as much as being recognized by others is fitting, welcome and even craved, knowing God ultimately sees and rewards is what matters.
Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up (Gal.6:9).
