The horrible shootings across America have people asking, "When is someone going to do something?"
This, of course, raises the question... "What should actually be done?"
In a nation where I fear most people have no idea, the Bible gives a clear starting point:
We repent.
The consistent message of scripture is that when calamity comes on a nation, the people are to turn to the Lord.
When the land of Judah was laid waste by locusts, it was a foreshadowing of greater judgement to come... if the people did not repent.
So the prophet Joel urged everyone -- from infants to newlyweds to elders -- to humble themselves before God with the hope of receiving His mercy...
“'Yet even now,' declares the LORD, 'return to me with all your heart, with fasting... weeping, and mourning; and rend your hearts...' Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster”... (Joel 2:12-27).
We'd be wise to hear these words with our hearts... and apply them to our own time.
As America suffers under growing afflictions, it better get our attention...
Let us consider how far we've strayed and turn back to the one who has the power to deliver judgment or bring mercy.
We need renewal... and that can only begin with repentance.
"Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away, that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord... (Acts 3:19,20).
