What do we make of the Canadian truck convoy going on?
I size it up as a natural and needed pushback against the overreach of the state.
Let's think about this biblically...
God has given three main spheres of government --- family, church and state -- with each having its own authorities -- parents, elders and civil rulers.
Within these spheres, each authority has their God-ordained responsibilities...
Parents as ministers of education... elders as ministers of grace... and civil rulers as ministers of justice.
This is God's order of things (Eph.6:1-4; Heb.13:17; Rom.13:1-7).
The world works best -- and advances God's mandate to rule and develop the earth -- when leaders stay within the bounds of their God-given authority.
But we face a problem today...
We've decided we don't want God's design bringing order to our society...
... and it's brought about an imbalance of power among God's three spheres of government... with the state growing in excessive power.
People are recognizing this and pushing back.
It's creating a clash, and I see this as a good thing.
Now some may ask... is pushing back with civil disobedience a Christian thing to do?
The Apostle Paul had no problem pushing back when it came to his rights as a Roman citizen (Acts 16:37-38, Acts 22:25-28).
But what about Romans 13... aren't we to obey civil rulers?
In general, yes. Absolutely.
Yet this requirement is not absolute... as even civil rulers are under the authority of God -- and they need to be reminded of their limits.
