Misinterpreting Bible verses has a way of adversely affecting your approach to life.
Consider Jn.18:36, where Jesus says: “My kingdom is not of this world."
Christians often take this to mean Jesus isn't concerned about what happens in the here and now, but only the things of eternity.
This tends to produce a passive approach to life, where what occurs in the world doesn't really matter... as long as our focus is on a spiritual afterlife.
But this verse doesn't encourage a disinterested approach to what's happening on earth.
The world has always been -- and remains to be -- the venue where God calls us to carry out a life of faithfulness...
... In the beginning God had Adam engage in the mundane activity of naming the animals.
... When Jesus began His ministry, He said the kingdom of God was at hand.
... And He taught us to pray, "Thy kingdom come Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."
So what was Jesus getting at when when He said His kingdom isn't of this world?
He was conveying that His kingdom doesn't operate according to the fallen systems of this world...
... but by the power and standards of the One who has established His throne in heaven and rules over all.
And this means -- as joint-heirs of Christ who will ultimately inherit the earth -- we are to extend His kingdom in everyday life through the grace and power of His Spirit.
