The phrase 'heart religion' goes back to at least the 18th century.
Though it sounds old-timey, heart religion continues to convey a critical reality:
One's faith must be more than believing a set of eternal truths or moral principles...
... it must touch the heart, and include feelings about your own need for God's grace, leading to a love for Christ and His commandments.
This is pretty basic stuff, familiar to anyone who has been in an evangelical church.
But here's something to add to our thinking about heart religion today.
Though your faith must grip your heart, it can't just be a private emotional experience that stops there...
... it has to move out and touch every cell of who you are, affecting what you do with your hands, feet, eyes, tongue, etc.
This is heart religion in its truest sense.
It's always working out what God is working in.
The Apostle Paul described this when he wrote:
"... work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure" (Phil.2:12-13).
