I've been listening to some lectures from Vishal
Mangalwadi, the faithful reformer from India.
In one of the lectures he makes an important point about Christ's words, "the truth will set you free" (Jn.8:32).
He notes:
"The truth sets you free from the
culture and empowers you to take on the culture and change it to what is good, beautiful, and true."
... Read that again and let it sink in.
Too often we take Christ's words about the truth setting us free as we would expect Western individualists to take them...
... We take them to be about setting us free from our individual guilt and life-dominating sins.
This, of course, is true and good...
But there's more...
The truth doesn't just set us free 'from' that which oppresses us.
The truth sets us free 'for' the work of bringing redemption to the world.
