It's often repeated by those who have a pessimistic view of
the future:
"You don't polish the brass on a sinking ship."
The idea behind the quote is that the world is like the Titanic -- sinking...
And just as it made no sense to polish the brass on the Titanic
as it went down, so is it foolish to seek to improve the culture and transform the world around us.
According to this thinking... your limited time on earth is much better spent "saving souls."
But there's a problem with the quote.
It assumes the world is sinking.
But the world's not sinking.
The kingdom of this world belongs to Christ.
And just as he ruled
over creation while taking a nap in a boat, so does He now govern all things as He brings redemption to the world...
And He calls us to be a part of it.
Not just by "saving souls."
... Saving souls
is just the beginning...
The goal is to make disciples of all nations (Mt.28:18-20).
So... no... polishing brass may not be something we give a lot of attention to... as we pay attention to greater concerns...
But neither should we give up on the world.
God hasn't.
