Should the government be doing more to solve the
nation's problems and meet people's needs?
According to a record-breaking 57% of Americans, the answer is "yes."
Hmm...
Last year the government spent over a trillion dollars more than it took
in.
And... most would agree... government isn't doing a great job solving the problems it's already been working on for a long time.
These reasons alone would make me vote "no" when it comes to wanting government to do more.
But there's actually a more fundamental reason to quit looking to government to solve our problems.
... It's not its job.
According to the Scripture, government has a very limited role...
It's to serve as a "minister of justice" (Gen.9:6; Rom.13)...
Which basically means... it's to protect the lives, liberty, and property of its citizens as they seek to fulfill the dominion mandate.
So... the real solving of problems and meeting of needs are not the tasks of
government.
These activities fall to individuals, families, churches. private organizations, etc... as they look to the Lord for His wisdom and provision.
In sum...
We need less
government...
And more faith, understanding, and responsible action.
