John Calvin has a reputation as a stern, heavyweight theologian
and reformer.
But he had a definite pastoral side to him as well.
One time he encouraged a certain well-known man who had been laid low by illness by telling him:
"You know my lord how difficult it is
amidst the honors, riches, and influences of the world to lend an ear to God...
God has willed to take you aside, as it were, so as to be heard more clearly...
He has given you this opportunity to profit in his school, as if he wanted to speak to you privately, in your ear."
Well said.
God has a way of using difficulties to get our attention and send us a message.
So...
If you face some burden...
like a health problem... or financial challenge... or relationship issue--or any other problem--don't react with depression and fear.
Let the Lord have your ear...
And listen to what He as to say to you.
Be still, and know that He is God (Ps. 46:10).
And make the most of the occasion to revise your values...
So you would live more in keeping with the mission he has for your life.
