An old Puritan -- William Perkins -- had a
great insight when talking about the poor.
He noted:
To be consumed with personal maintenance is no calling, but the life of a beast.
(You might want to read that again and let it sink in.)
Jesus would agree, of course... as He said:
"Is not
life more than food, and the body more than clothing (Mt.6:25)?"
But the interesting thing is...
Perkins' observation applies to more than just the poor.
It applies to everyone.
So...
Anyone who is preoccupied with food and drink and
clothing...
... and in our day we should probably add sex and entertainment...
... is really not fulfilling a calling.
But just living the life of a beast.
Yet...
... As those who bear God's image...
He has created us for so much more.
