Keep the little ones from stumbling

Published: Sat, 01/28/17

I had to stop at the post office yesterday.

While waiting in line...

A woman ahead of me was speaking loudly about how her daughter came home from school with all kinds of opinions about the recent Women's March in Washington.

Note: her daughter was just six-years-old.

I heard the woman say she asked her daughter, "How often do you talk about this kind of stuff?"

And the daughter's answer was, "All the time, Mom. All the time. It's everywhere."

How sad.

And alarming.

If young children are immersed in partisan politics at school -- instead of actually learning something worthwhile -- it's pretty hard for them not to turn into adults who see the world as...

... Entirely political.

... A battle of us versus them.

... And a place where the State is all powerful, giving favors to those with the loudest voice.

And it becomes easy for them to miss the truth that...

... The State is to actually have a very minimal role in life... simply upholding justice in the land...

... So we're all free to pursue our callings and use our gifts... to build God's kingdom through our families, churches, communities and work.

When I'm reminded of how much politics has come to dominate our culture, I can't help but think of Jesus's warning about not making little children stumble (Mt.18:6).

Let's help our kids escape the myth that it's politics that makes the world go round.

And let's help them discover their callings and use their gifts for the glory of God.
