The Secret of Great Cooks

Published: Wed, 01/18/17

What is the secret of great cooks?

You might think it's a stash of unknown recipes...

Or their special ingredients...

Or secret sauce.

But actually... what tends to set great cooks apart isn't even about food.

It's that they tend to practice what's called mise en place.

... That's pronounced: MEEZ ahn plahs.

Mise en place is a French culinary phrase that has to do with having everything in good order.

So... before a good cook turns on a burner, everything is 'put in place.'

This includes: spices, prepared vegetables, cuts of meat, etc...

... even knives, cutting boards, spoons, spatulas, and pots and pans have their setup.

Mise en place is not limited to just assembling ingredients and utensils, though...

It's a state of mind... that promotes efficiency, quality... and the ability to handle whatever may come one's way.

Now...

What does this have to do with you?

Well, if you do any cooking at all, practicing mise en place should help you become a better cook.

Try it!

But even if you've never boiled an egg, this concept is worth applying...

Because as you seek to get dominion throughout your life, everything has its place.

... your personal disciplines, your marriage, your family, your work, your church, your community...

And as you intentionally give everything its place, you will more effectively fulfill all that God calls you to do.
