Why Christians Aren't Interested in Taking Dominion

A couple weeks ago I got together with a friend of mine across the state.

While we were walking to lunch, he made a comment that's stuck with me.

He said:

"You know, I don't see a lot of Christians interested in taking dominion."

As soon as he finished the sentence I knew he was right...

... Christians -- for the most part -- don't even have the word 'dominion' -- which is a very biblical word -- in their vocabulary.

Why is that?

Well... a big part of it has to do with their teaching.

Waaaay too many of God's people have been taught to get more excited about escaping the world than transforming it.

Years ago this problem was identified as "rapture fever."

But there are other reasons Christians refuse to take dominion as well.

To rule and cultivate your little piece of the planet in a godly way will personally challenge you like nothing else.

It means:

... taking responsibility...

... applying the WHOLE Bible to ALL of life...

... and thinking and acting in ways that go against this world's system.

Now... as children of Adam, all of these are things we'd prefer to avoid...

Because they challenge our desire to live independently from God.

But... as a child of the second Adam, these are exactly the kinds of actions you are to take in the areas God has called you.

It's part of what it means to be a new creature in Him.

And...here's the great irony:

Though taking dominion is something we tend to resist, it's only as we seek to exercise it that we are most satisfied with our lives.

Everything else is a side show... or a distraction... from being who God made you to be.

Bottom line:

Christ came to bring transformation to our world... and He has gifted you to participate in the process (Eph.2:10).

So get to it.

In the end, nothing else will satisfy you.

"And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth" (Genesis 1:28).
