Well, the Cubbies did it.
After 108 years they finally won the World Series...
And in so doing broke the alleged "Curse of the Billy Goat."
... But did they actually?
I mean... was there really a curse?
A lot of Cub fans think so...
The story goes back to 1945 when William Sianis was asked to leave Wrigley Field... the home of the Cubs and the site of the 1945 World Series... because his pet goat, Murphy, was stinking up the
place.
Sianis reacted in a huff, declaring the Cubs would never win again... which is usually taken to mean they would never win a World Series again.
Interestingly, the Cubs lost the Series in 1945...
And there have been a lot of freak incidents that have made the Cubs look like a cursed team...
... a black cat walking on the field... an easy ground ball rolling through a player's legs... a fan interfering with a catchable foul ball...
... and, of
course, the Cubs have failed to even appear in the World Series for 71 years...
But does this mean the Cubs were really under a CURSE?
I was talking about this with my sister-in-law a couple of weeks ago while visiting in Chicago.
She's an astute, lifelong Cubs fan... and she claims there's never been a curse.
She said... the Cubs' problem has been that for so many years all they cared about was putting a team on the field and
selling a lot of beer.
As a White Sox fan who has watched the Cubs from a distance, I have to agree.
The Cubs failures have had more to do with priorities and the quality of the team than a goat.
So... no... there's never been a real billy goat curse.
And the Cubs team has not been under a curse...
...Except for the curse we're all under...
The curse described in the third chapter of Genesis.
There we learn we've all come under a curse due to
sin's entrance in the world.
And because of this curse our work is toilsome -- and winning is HARD.
A few years ago it seems like the Cubs figured this out...
And with a new owner, new management, new players... as well as a lot of effort, perseverance... and favor from above... the Cubs were able to put it all together in 2016.
The lesson for us in this?
If things have been rough for you, don't assume you're under any particular curse... other than the
one that afflicts all humanity...
Because that curse requires us all to put in some perspiration--possibly for a very long time--if we're going to win at something worth our effort.
And in your efforts today, may the Cubs be an inspiration.

"Sad is the day for any man when he
becomes absolutely satisfied with the life he is living, the thoughts that he is thinking and the deeds that he is doing; when there ceases to be forever beating at the doors of his soul a desire to do something larger which he seeks and knows he was meant and intended to do." ~Phillips Brooks
