Can you name all
eight of your great-grandparents?
I read recently that most people can't.
And when I tried to recall mine, I discovered I couldn't either.
I had to cheat by looking at the diagram of our family tree my parents created some years back.
This exercise got me thinking...
How little we remember those who've gone before
us.
We're so absorbed with our own challenges we forget about those who faced their own in days gone by.
Well... today is a good time to reflect on those who have gone before you because it's All Saints Day.
Originally All Saints Day was a day that those in the early church honored loved ones who were martyrs for the faith.
Since then, All Saints Day has become a time to celebrate the faithfulness
of those who have gone on to their reward.
... A way for the Church Militant to remember the Church Triumphant.
There's no way... of course... any of us can recount all the ways the faithfulness of our predecessors have impacted our lives for good.
But we can honor them by recalling their place in history and giving thanks.
AND by serving faithfully in our own
time...
There's an obscure verse in the book of Acts about King David worth pondering.
It reads:
"For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers, and underwent decay" (Acts 13:36).
Pretty sobering verse... but challenging too.
We all have our time to serve God's purpose.
...
David had his.
... Our great-grandparents had theirs.
... And we have our time.
The only question is... will we faithfully fulfill the purpose God has for us in our generation?

"Sad is the day for any man when he becomes absolutely satisfied with the life he is living, the thoughts that he is thinking and the deeds that he is doing; when there ceases to be forever beating at the doors of
his soul a desire to do something larger which he seeks and knows he was meant and intended to do." ~Phillips Brooks
